DRYER REPAIR AND INSTALLATION​

Your dryer may be taking a day off due to a number of reasons. Check the power source first in order to make sure your dryer is completely plugged in. Check the electrical panel. If there is a tripped circuit breaker, flip the breaker fully to the “off” position and move the handle to the “on” position. A faulty door switch, broken dryer timer, or faulty control board may cause the problem as well.

For an electric dryer, make sure you are using a proper volt power outlet. Consult the dryer’s owner’s manual. For a gas dryer, check if it is connected to the gas line and the shut-off valve is open. Call a specialist to check the power and/or gas source. Make sure that the lint screen is clean. For a vented dryer, the vent has to be cleaned once a year or at least once in two years. Vacuum the vent from both ends to remove debris and lint. Check where the vent exits the house. When the dryer is running, you should see a steady stream of warm air passing through the vent exit. Nothing should be blocking it. If the vent is clean, but the problem has not been solved, it may be time to call a specialist as the problem appears to be more serious. It may require some part replacement, for example, the heating element or the thermal fuse.

A different type of noise means a different type of problem. A loud thumping or a roar is a typical symptom of a loose blower wheel. A squeaky sound may be a signal of a worn drum bearing. Two of the most likely causes of a dryer that smells like sweat are  mildewed clothes in the dryer and long-term lint build-up. When you pick up a burning smell from your dryer when it is running, that could be an indication of a serious problem. You need to stop using the dryer until you can determine the source of the bad odour. A spray cleaner that was recently used inside of your dryer can cause a burning smell too. It is better to clean the surfaces with a mixture of bleach and cold water.

Another possible reason for the burning smell can be a lint build-up somewhere in the system, a bent vent hose, electrical shorts or a malfunctioning internal part that needs to be replaced. Malfunctioning dryers cause thousands of house fires every year, therefore, it is very important to take a burning smell seriously and call an appliance specialist to diagnose and fix the problem.

Placing already bad-smelling clothes in the dryer and lint build-up are the most common reasons for a sweat-smelling dryer. If you have a condenser tumble dryer, it needs to be cleaned regularly. The water tank must be emptied after each use. A blocked or improperly connected drain hose can cause unpleasant odours. New dryers may give off a slightly burning plastic smell which should go away after the first two or three uses. If the smell persists, check the filters and the condenser to see if they’re clean: textile fibres or bits of fluff and lint can sometimes end up coming into contact with the heating element, resulting in a burning smell being produced.
